The Small World Network Effect in Software Project Teams
نویسنده
چکیده
Team cohesion and the dynamics of team formation are important parts of any project, with software projects being no exception. An interesting aspect of team building is the relationships formed between the team members. Because of these relationships, representing software team members as a graph may be a natural way to explore team dynamics. As team members move between projects, these graphs become more and more connected as team members collaborate and form new relationships. We show that this connectivity, known as the “small world effect,” has a positive impact on team performance when the connectivity levels are moderate. Performance degrades, however, at both very high and very low levels of connectivity. This aligns with similar research findings of non-software teams.

Socio-technical Interactions in OSS Development
This study is going to provide directions to open source practitioners to better organize their projects to achieve greater performance. In this research, we try to understand socio-technical interactions in a system development context by examining the joint effect of developer team structure and open source software architecture on OSS development performance. We hypothesize that developer te...
متن کاملThe Impact of the Structure of Communication Patterns in Global Software Development: An Empirical Analysis of a Project Using Agile Methods
Successful software development depends on effective communication within and across teams. Structural properties of communication have long been recognized as important drivers of project performance. However, the empirical results are mixed in terms of which particular communication structures are effective in the context of geographically distributed projects. In this paper, we examined the ...
متن کاملIncorporating Realistic Teamwork into a Small College Software Engineering Curriculum1
Software Engineering is by nature a collaborative process. Nearly all production software is designed by teams, working over a long period of time, using software tools to aid in the management of large, complex projects. In the real world, software projects continue for years, team composition changes, and a legacy library containing both documents and code provides project continuity. Unlike ...
متن کاملMeasuring the Performance of the Virtual Teams in Global Software Development Projects
The development teams who are geographically spread, culturally mixed and mainly depend on information and communication technology (ICT) for communication is defined as a global virtual teams (GVTs). Despite the advancement of technologies, achieving the efficient performance of GVTs remains a challenge. The reviewed literature has highlighted the importance of training and development, organi...
متن کاملAdoption and Diffusion of Groupware In Software Engineering Projects
This research is investigating the provision of such network-based support for software engineering teams, both geographically distributed at multiple sites and co-located on a single site. Initially the research has focused on identifying appropriate groupware technology and small-scale experiments to assess its suitability for software engineering related tasks. The immediate objective is to ...
